Introduction

Welcome friends. This humble blog is about the simple observations I discover whilst cycling through lovely Wales.
I hope to offer you dear reader, cheerful reflections upon the days and miles I pedal, along with encouragement to get out and explore by bicycle yourself! Perhaps too, if I attempt a bit of amusing anecdotes along the way, I may invoke your readership as well. Thanks for stopping by... cheers, muse

Good for the head...

Everybody knows that sometimes ya just gotta get away from everything, away from all the day to day thinkin', away from work, away from worry, away from the crazy people that drive ya plumb crazy, away from friends, away from family... away from your lover that ya just can't get enough of... and there ain't no explainin' why and there ain't no reason to blame; ya just got to get away and just think about nothin'.

and sometimes, just maybe...

... you see the world in an entirely new light.

and it's days like this that me say... "I am a very lucky boy indeed."

Tongwylais Workday...

PREFACE: It's utterly embarrassing how bad I've been at posting this summer... and in particular; this one should have been up over a month ago. But I am not yet without memory and with all due respect to those that made these hard yet very successful workdays possible... I offer my sincere thanks.

The work took place over two consecutive Tuesdays; the 17th & 24th of July.... executed on the Taff Trail (NCN Route 8) between Taff's Well and Tongwynlais. And as you can see from the photos below... we hacked the heck outa the brush that was dominating most of the path. We cleaned and swept. We removed trees and branches that were blocking important signs for both cyclists AND motorists.

What started out as a narrow man-way...

became wide and clear.

We also helped out the motorists some...

and found signs for cyclists along the way.

Worthy individuals whose names shall be named... Will Rossouw, Tom Jones, Trevor (missing last name... my apologies!) and the dangerous; Tim John. Thank you again fellas. You are a fine and hard working band of men I would be happy with which to serve again. Three Cheers!

Will Rossouw... "The Navigator".

Will and Tom Jones... "Mr. Detail".

Tim John... aka; "Johnny Dangerous"

Some final shots...

All of the efforts shown above were made by hard working individuals... free of charge. Why? Because they care about our paths and want to help maintain the fabulous walking and cycling routes we all share here in wonderful Wales!

(My apologies to Trevor for not getting yer photo taken...)

Maybe Maerdy, Maybe Not...

The plan for our ride this day had been to start at Pontypridd, head northwest up NCN 881 past Maerdy to where it joins NCN Route 47, turn right and head back. Simple enough, eh? Well, as time was running short and we needed to get back, we made the decision to head over the mountain, ie "take the short cut".

All smiles as we turned out of Fernwood and
headed up into Blaenlechau...

So began the climb...

and climb...

and climb...

and climb...

and climb we did.

I think it was Joanne that suggested we stop at the top for lunch... "Fabulous views", she said. And that part was true...

Proud smiles and cameras document the ascent...

and silliness with the video camera...

and lunch of course!

The background... see the background?

But all was not as it seemed (or as we were told...). For what was ahead...

... was up.

and up.

At every turn was another spectacular view... (and a valid excuse to pause, catch your breath, and pull out the camera.)

Onward we climbed...

I think Will said we climbed over 1000 feet that day? Regardless, it was truly spectacular and yet another surprising adventure in Wales for this very fortunate cyclist.

We did make it to the top.... we did ride over 40 miles... and we did make it home...
we did have a great day... many thanks folks.

[ For more images of this adventure see: "Maerdy Adventure" in the gallery. ]

oh, yeah... I must not forget too...

"Mr. Fix-it"... Will fixes signs. Awesome butty.
